Music, Mental Health and Memories with The Mercians
In late September, we were thrilled to welcome Leicester-based band – The Mercians – into our school. The local five-piece indie and rock group – who are making waves on the national music landscape – took to the stage in the Main Hall and performed in front of our Year 10 and 11 students.
They sang two of their own songs – ‘54321’ and their latest release, ‘Sunday’ – and also performed two covers, one from the Arctic Monkeys and one by Amy Winehouse. A special shoutout to Ms Lowe – one of our amazing Hearing Impaired support workers – who used British Sign Language to sign the performance as it was happening!
After a raucous round of applause, the band then engaged with our students in a discussion about mental health. They reflected on their own experiences and spoke openly and honestly about how they managed their mental wellbeing.
Continuing the topic, the band members emphasised the importance of being kind to one another and, in an ever-evolving digital world, the need to stay safe online.
Students were then able to pose questions to the band and get autographs and photos.
A memorable day and one that was both entertaining and informative.
A huge thank you to The Prime Agency for their support in making this event happen.
The Mercians are headlining at the Leicester 02 Academy this November. If you're interested in learning more about them, read up on one of our alumni articles, which features a member of The Mercians, who previously attended The Castle Rock School.
