Students enjoy magical experience at Harry Potter World

In early February, 100 students from Years 7 to 10 enjoyed a spellbinding day at Harry Potter World in London.

The trip – a reward for those who had demonstrated excellent behaviour and worked hard throughout Autumn Term Two – allowed students to delve deeper into the fascinating world that formed the basis of the famous novel and film series.

Students began their day by attending a fascinating Movie Maths Lesson, which explored how the filmmakers applied maths throughout the eight films. Students were particularly impressed by how they used scale factor to create the impression of Hagrid being a half-giant. They built two versions of his hut – a larger version to make the other characters look smaller, and a smaller one to make Hagrid look bigger. The workshop gave students an insight into how the concepts they have used in their learning can be applied in a creative context.

They were also able to visit some of the film’s most iconic sets – including the Chamber of Secrets, Albus Dumbledore’s Office, the Great Hall and the Knight Bus – while also examining some notable props and costumes.

The highlight for many, though, was the opportunity to hop on a broomstick and pose for a commemorative picture in front of a greenscreen, creating the impression they were soaring through the skies, competing in a real game of Quidditch.

The students returned home with unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for the magic behind the scenes.
